Abstract

To reduce aircraft tyre wear during initial touch-down, by inducing wheel rotation prior to landing, vanes 2 are positioned on the tyres or wheels so as to generate torque in aircraft wheels 1, by the effect of air flow past said wheels. <IMAGE>

Description

Wheel Rotation Mechanism General Description This invention refers to the mechanism for assisting wheel-rotation prior to aircraft landing.
Normally, aircraft wheels are not rotating sympathetically to the direction of travel, prior to touch-down this causes excessive tyre wear on each landing, during the initial moments of touch down.
According to the present invention, a wheel rotation mechanism is incorporated to rotate the wheels sympathetically so that tyre wear is reduced on each touch-down.
This mechanism comprises a set of vanes incorporated on each wheel, which will induce the wheel to turn in the air stream. Such vanes may be moulded or bonded onto the walls of the tyre or incorporated in the wheel fabrication. Another example may incorporate a seperate Fabrication, to be attached to the wheel.
A specific example of the invention will now be decribed with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of vanes on the tyre wall.
Figure 2 shows a side view of vanes on the wheel or attached to it as a seperate Fabrication.
Figures 3 and 5 show the plan view of vanes as described in Figures 1 and 2, but on one side of a wheel only.
Figures 4 and 6 show the plan view of vanes as described in Figures 1 and 2, but on both sides of a wheel.
Illustration Referring to the accompanying drawings,the vanes 2, may be curved or straight and positioned so as to afford the best attitude to the air stream,to effect the desired rotation of the wheel 1.

Claims (6)

Claims
1. Sets of vanes on aircraft wheels 1,which will generate wheel rotation just prior to touch-down.
2. Sets of vanes as claimed in Claim 1, which will be attached to the tyre wall of an aircraft wheel 1, or incorporated in the wheel Fabrication or seperately Fabricated and attached to a wheel 1.
3. Sets of vanes as claimed in Claim 2,which may be incorporated on both sides of a wheel 1.
4. Sets of vanes as claimed in Claims 1 to 3, which may be moulded into the tyre Fabric, or bonded to the tyre Fabric, or seperately Fabricated and attached to a wheel 1.
5. Sets of vanes as claimed in the preceeding claims, which may be of tyre material, any type of plastic or ceramic composite or metal.
6. Sets of vanes as claimed in the preceeding claims and positioned to advantage in the air stream.
