Abstract

603,804. Aircraft landing wheels. MANHEIM, L. W. Oct. 30, 1945, No. 28760. [Class 4] In order to effect rotation of a landing wheel prior to its making contact with the ground. the wheel mounting comprises a casing 13 forming a chamber 11<SP>1</SP> for the upper half of the wheel, and spaced from an upper casing 9 to provide a passage for the rearward flow of air, which is discharged forwardly by a nozzle 12 at the end of the casing 9 into the chamber 11<SP>1</SP> and against the upper portion of the wheel to effect rotation. In the form shown the wheel tyre 21 is provided with integral or detachable vanes 22 against which the air from the nozzle 12 impinges, the effect being augmented by the air stream impinging against the vanes on the lower half of the tyre. The flow of air through the nozzle may be controlled by a valve 15.
