Abstract

756,185. Generating combustion products under pressure. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1955 [Jan. 19, 1954], No. 1591/54. Class 51(1). In combustion apparatus in which a high velocity stream of combustion-supporting gas flows through a duct, means are provided for ensuring stabilized combustion and comprise a faired body mounted in the duct, the body having one or more apertures in at least one of the surfaces over which the gas stream flows, means being provided for ejecting fluid from the aperture to intercept the gas flow thereby producing a recirculation region in which stable combustion can occur. The invention is shown applied in the case of a reheat system of a gas turbine jet propulsion engine, an annular body 23 of faired section being disposed in the annular duct between the jet pipe 14 and the tail cone 15. The body 23 is provided with apertures 26 on its inner and outer surfaces and some of the gas flowing through the duct may enter the body 23 through the open upstream end and issue through the apertures 26 to provide an aerodynamic baffle on the downstream side of which a stable combustion zone occurs. Fuel may be supplied to the zone through a nozzle 28 disposed at the downstream end of the body 23. The opening at the upstream end of the body is controlled by a valve 25, the valve being open as shown in Fig. 3, when reheat is in operation and closed as in Fig. 3A when reheat is not in operation. Air under pressure may be supplied to the faired body instead of gas from the main stream and the fuel may be injected into the gas stream upstream of the faired body. Again, the fuel may be supplied by adding it to the injected gas stream. Specification 713,265 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 751,013 and 751,098.
