Abstract
593,520. Attaching handles &c. to pottery articles. STRASSER, H. May 31, 1945, No. 13640. [Class 87(i)] A machine for fitting handles or other appendages to cups or other pottery articles comprises arms 40, 17 carrying, respectively, chucks 38 for the cups and cradles 25 for the handles, and continuously rotated in unison by a vertical shaft 11. As shown, four arms 17 and four arms 40 are provided. Each arm 17 is hinged at 20 so that its outer portion normally falls to the position shown, and is provided with a roller 32. During rotation of the arms, each arm 17 in turn is straightened by its roller 32 riding up a ramp 33. This action presses the handle against the corresponding cup. The highest portion of the ramp is constituted by a pneumatic tyre 34, so that the pressure of the handle on the cup is yielding. The outer ends of all the arms are adjustable angularly by means of dowels and set screws 22, 43, and the chucks and cradles are carried by brackets 39, 24 adjustable lengthwise and heightwise of the arms. Several chucks of different form may be carried by a frame rotatable on the end of each arm 40. The arms 23, 40 are adjustable heightwise of the shaft 11, which is rotated slowly by a motor 14 and reduction gear. Each cradle comprises a rubber block 26 held upwardly in a frame 25 by a light spring 30. The block and frame meet on inclined surfaces 26a, so that pressure of the handle 27 against a cup compresses the block so that it grips the handle and holds it against distortion.
