Abstract

1341980 Finishing and reshaping pottery NIPPON TOKI KK (NORITAKE CO Ltd) 20 Dec 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 59110/71 Heading C1H An apparatus for performing a sequence of finishing operations on ceramic ware, e.g. cups, comprises a number of spindles 3 arranged on a turntable 2 or conveyer; each spindle is provided with a support 4 which has a supporting surface corresonding to the shape of the inside of the bottom of the ware, an air-tight flexible plate 5, e.g. of rubber, and an air release port 6. A cup a resting on a supporter 4 is fed to the position I and a support 15 is moved under the cup by operation of the horizontal cylinder 9. The cylinder 10 is then operated to lift the mounting plate 16 and the support 15 so as to raise the cup free of the supporter 4. The press-head 14 is engaged in the foot c of the cup by operation of the cylinder 8 to centre the cup on the spindle 3. The cup is then lowered on to the supporter 4 and held thereon by evacuating air through the port 6; the support 15 is then lowered. The spindle 3 carrying the cup is transferred to the position II in which one or more foot forming tools 18 and a rim trimming tool 19 are moved by an air cylinder 17 to rough cut the outer periphery of the foot c and the rim b. In the position III the cup is smoothed by a wire-cage or metal roller 23 provided on an arm 20 which is pivoted by an air-cylinder 22; its foot c is finished by a damp sponge belt 24 which can be moved about the pivot 30 by the air-cylinder 25, and its rim b is finished by moist sponge roller 26. The finished cup is moved to a release position in which air is fed through the port 6 to release the cup from the spindle.
