Abstract
11,048. Hancock, F. July 30. Pottery, throwing and turning - Where the article, such as an insulator, basin, or the like, is rotated under a tool by means of a chuck 1, Figs. 2 and 6, on a sleeve 2 keyed but sliding on the jigger-shaft 3, an auxiliary or inner chuck 11 is provided upon a spindle 12 loose in a central boring in the jigger-shaft. Thus, when lowered from the tool, the article rests on the inner chuck and can be slowed down by hand and removed without stopping the jiggershaft. Fig. 6 shows both chucks as blocks or disks for supporting a basin, cup, or the like; Fig. 2 shows them as cylinders to enter the annular cavity of an insulator, the main chuck engaging it with a wedging effect; Fig. 5 shows the main chuck as a cylinder to lift an insulator by the skirt, and the innet chuck as a plug to enter the central cavity. The main chuck is keyed to a pulley 3<b> instead of to the jigger-shaft. Thus, a 'tool for shaping the article internally may be thrust up in the annular space between chuck and spindle. As shown in Fig. 6, a longitudinally movable ring-rest 16, on which the article may be centred, is sometimes added.
