728,072. Attaching handles &c. to pottery articles. STRASSER, H. July 10, 1953 [July 15 1952; Jan. 17, 1953; June 23,1953], Nos. 17786/52, 1423/53 and 17317/53. Class 87 (1). In a machine for attaching handles &c. to pottery articles in which a handle 60 is presented to a cup &c. on a chuck 38 by a cradle comprising two hinged parts 55, 56 between which the handle is held, a yielding component is provided in the action by which the handle is pressed against the cup. The machine may include means for applying slip to and/or trimming the ends of the handle. The resilient component may be rubber-like projecting sections of the chuck and/or a pneumatic tyred wheel 34 on a cam 22 by which the cradle is raised and lowered. The cradle is mounted on a pivoted arm 51 provided with a depending extension 53a carrying a cam roll 54. After a handle has been placed on the movable part 56 of the cradle, the movable part is moved up to the fixed part 55 by the engagement with an arm 61 of a striker roller 63a operated by a cam roll 73. The cradle is held closed against a spring 80 by a catch 78 until the latter is freed by a striker 76 also operated by the cam roll 73. The chuck is adjustably mounted as described in Specification 698,694. A slip-applying pad 97 mounted on a two-armed lever 92 which is controlled by cam surfaces 85, 86 acting through a spring-pressed lever 88, is moved to dip into a trough 98 of slip and to apply slip to the ends of the handle. The ends of the handle may be trimmed by a cutter 118 carried by a spring-controlled bracket 117 rotatably mounted on an arm 113 and guided by rollers 114, 120 co-operating with a profile or profiles 115 on the handle cradle 55, 56. The arm 113 is pivoted on a rod 106 which is slidable in a bracket 108 and is operated by a cam 100 through levers 101, 103. The handle is held during trimming by a pad 57 movable away from the fixed part 55 to co-operate with a pad 58 on the hinged part 56 of the cradle.
