Abstract

1357158 Boots &c SALIENT ENG Ltd 3 Nov 1972 [5 Nov 1971 12 Feb 1972] 51464/71 and 6659/72 Heading A3B Apparatus for string lasting comprises means for clamping a string and power means comprising two relatively movable parts, the clamping means being mounted on one part and the other part serving for abutment against the last or a workpiece thereon, wherein actuation of the power means causes the clamping means to move away from the last. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, a bollard 1 for clamping the string is mounted on an arm 9 attached to the piston rod 8 of a pneumatic ram 2. The closed end of cylinder 4 carries a block 6 shaped to engage the heel part of the last. Cylinder 4 is slideable along a slideway 12 which is mounted between the pivoted arms of a counterweighted bracket 13. In use, the bracket 13 is swung down toward the last 7 until ram 2 is horizontal and the cylinder 4 is slid forward until block 6 engages the heel part. A free string end is led to the bollard 1 and a single turn is taken around it. The ram is then actuated moving the bollard and heel apart thereby pulling the string. The apparatus may be used in conjunction with a sole and heel moulding machine. In a modification (Fig. 3 not shown) the apparatus is mounted by an L-shaped arm on a bar which pivots about a horizontal axis transverse to the ram axis and which is itself mounted at the end of a horizontal bar adjustably supported by a clamp at the top end of a column which projects from a base fixed to a bench surface which receives the last. In a further modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the apparatus is suspended from a gallows to enable work to be done on lasts which are presented in succession to the operator. Alternatively, the gallows may pivot about a vertical axis to work on a fixed array of lasts. In still further modifications, the apparatus may be suspended from a trolley which runs on an overhead gantry or carried on an arm projecting from a wheeled trolley which runs on the floor.
