Abstract

1,057,325. Boots, &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. May 12, 1964 [May 14, 1963], No. 19644/64. Heading A3B. Apparatus for use in the manufacture of shoes comprises transfer means for transferring lasts between the work stations of consecutive machines, the transfer means comprising gripping means for supporting the lasts and means for moving the gripping means to transfer the lasts. As described lasts of the type described in Specification 863,464 are transferred from a heel attaching machine A of the type described in Specification 980,176 to a heel trimming machine B of the type described in Specification 1,057,324. The last is supported by a carrier 28 which slides along guide rods 30, 32 and is connected by cables 40, which pass around pulleys 74, to both faces of a piston 38 in a cylinder 36. The carrier 28 is stopped at each end of the guide rods 30, 32 by adjustable stops 195 (Fig. 5, not shown) with the carrier 28 in alignment with the work station of the machine. The carrier 28 normally occupies a rest position between the two machines. The last has positioning plate 44 which is gripped between a fixed jaw 88 and a movable jaw 92 on an arm 80 which is pivoted on the carrier 28 for movement between an operative position (Fig. 5, not shown) and an inoperative position (Fig. 2). The movable jaw 92 is pivoted to the arm 80 and is moved to grip the last positioning plate 44 by a piston and cylinder 180 via a bell crank 114. The arm 80 is pivoted to a carrier 28 by a pin 78 which also carries a guide arm 82 which has a roll 132 mounted on its lower surface (Fig. 5, not shown). On moving into the work station of machine A (Fig. 2) the roll engages a cam block 134 which swings the arm 80 into operative position. At machine B the arm 80 is swung into inoperative position by the roll being engaged by a cam block 242 which is moved by a piston and cylinder 214. The work supports of both machines are similar in construction and are movable heightwise between a low, inoperative position and a high operative position. In both machines the last is loaded or unloaded by the transfer device at a height intermediate these two positions. The machine has a pneumatic control circuit which operates as follows:- when the heel attaching machine A has finished its cycle the carrier 28 moves from its rest position between the two machines (with the arm 80 in inoperative position) to the work station of machine A where the arm 80 is swung into operative position. Cylinder 108 is then operated to grip the last positioning plate between the jaws 88, 92 and the work support moves to its lowest position. The carrier 28 then moves to the work station of machine B where it positions the last above the work support. The work support is then raised and as it picks up the last the jaws are opened to release the last. Cylinder 214 is then operated to move the arm 80 to its inoperative position and the carrier moves back to its rest position between the machines.
