A machine for roughening the lasting margin of a lasted shoe upper 13 includes a revolving support for the last and a rotary scraping tool 72 which automatically follows the contours of the lasting margin as the last rotates. The last is supported by a last pin 11 and a toe support 9, both of which are adjustably mounted on a rotating carrier 7 driven by a gear 24. The last is clamped to the support by a heel clamp 16 mounted on spring loaded rods 14 and a side clamp 21 mounted on a crank arm 22. The clamps 16, 21 can be opened to load the last in the machine by two hydraulic cylinders (not shown) arranged on one side of the machine, the piston rods of which engage a cross bar 19 on the rods 14 and a roller 23 on the crank arm 22. The scraping tool assembly is mounted on a carriage 31 which can move along guides 30 towards and away from the last support under the action of weights 32 connected to the carriage 31 by chains 33 and by a hydraulic cylinder 36 connected by a chain 35. The carriage 31 carries a cross shaft 41 in which is pivoted a longitudinal shaft 42. A table 61, which carries the scraping tool 72 and its drive motor 64, is pivoted to the shaft 42, thus allowing the table 61 to tilt about the axes of the shafts 41, 42. The table 61 and shaft 42 can be lifted into an operative position by a lever 101 operated by hydraulic cylinder 96. The shaft 42 carries two guide rollers 45 which ensure that the scraping tool 72 is carried at the correct height and at right angles to the lasting margin, and a guide roller 49 which follows the contour of the shoe upper in the toe and heel regions. In the shank region movement of the carriage 31 is controlled by a cam 111 which engages a follower 112 on the carriage 31. The machine is controlled by a set of cams on a main cam shaft which operate the hydraulic cylinders in the correct sequence so that the machine automatically roughens the whole of the lasting margin of the shoe upper.
