Abstract

1,135,157. Boots &c. COMPO INDUSTRIES Inc. 26 May, 1967 [3 June, 1966], No. 24480/67. Heading A3B. Apparatus for roughing a shoe bottom consists of a last support which moves the lasted shoe past a pair of endless abrasive belts 12 which can move heightwise so that each belt 12 follows the contour of the shoe bottom as it moves past. Each shoe support consists of two base plates 34 which are supported by rollers 38 which run along guide rails 18. The plates 34 are secured in pairs to a drive chain 26 which moves the shoe support through the machine. The forward plate 34 carries a toe rest 40 which is adjustable heightwise by screw 42 and lengthwise along grooves 48. The rear plate 34 carries a last pin 56 on a block 60 which is pivoted at 62 to posts 64 on the plate 34. The block 60 is tilted when a roller 72 on an arm 68 engages a cam rail 74, tilting of the block 60 causing the last to be locked on the support. Each endless abrasive band 12 is carried by a drive pulley 78, pulley 76 and a tensioning pulley. 81. The pulley 78 is driven by an electric motor 206 via belt 202. The pulleys 76, 78, 81 are mounted on a beam 82 having one end pivoted to a post 122 and the other end pivoted to a slide block 136. The post 122 can be adjusted heightwise by a screw 128 operated by wheel 134 and the block 136 can move heightwise along guides 138 under the action of a piston and cylinder 142. The piston and cylinder 142 is controlled by a servo-valve 154 which is operated by a sensing arm 102 on the beam 82 so that movement of the sensing arm 102 causes corresponding heightwise movement of the beam 82, thus causing the lower run 80 of the belt to follow the contour of the shoe bottom. The belt 80 is pressed against the shoe bottom by means of a brush 90 which is moved downwardly by an air motor 98 carried by an extension 104 of the arm 102. The belts 80 are raised when cams 182 on the shoe support operate switches S1, the position of the cams 182 being adjustable. In operation the operator places a lasted upper on the support which then moves through the machine and the roller 72 engages the cam track 74 to lock the last on the support. As the lasted upper moves through the machine the sensing arm 102 contacts the shoe bottom which causes the belt 80 to be moved to its correct heightwise position. The shoe then interrupts the beam of a photo-electric device 162, 164 which causes the brush to press down on the belt 80. When the roughing operation has been completed the belts 80 are raised, the last is unlocked and is removed from the machine.
