Abstract
967,304. Sole rounding machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. May 10, 1961 [May 12, 1960], No. 16915/61. Heading A3B. A sole rounding machine having a jack for supporting a shoe, on its last, the jack being rotatable about an axis extendding heightwise of the last and having means for simultaneously oscillating the jack relative to the cutting mechanism, has means for centring the shoe with the midpoint of the last bottom at the axis of rotation of the jack and means controlled by said centring means for automatically determining the amplitude of oscillation imparted to the jack in accordance with the size of the last. A last L carrying a shoe is provided with a size indicating surface 100 and is mounted on a pin 104 of a jack 12 which jack comprises a holder 102 for the last L the holder being mounted for last positioning movements lengthwise and heightwise of the last L. The positioning movement is determined by the engagement of a sensing element 132 with the size indicating surface 100 of the last L. The sensing element 132 is attached to a bar 134 which moves in a vertical slot 136 in the holder 102 and also moves on rollers 138 in grooves 140 in the inner side of guide plates 142 one of which is fixed on each side of a cradle 122. The holder 102 slides in a carrier 118 to permit adjustment of the holder upon the carrier lengthwise of the last by the screw 119. The carrier 118 is mounted on rollers 120 which are received in grooves 121, the inclination of which defines the size ratio of lasts to be used. Movement of jack 12 to the left as seen in Fig. 9 raises the sensing element 132 until it abuts the size indicating surface 100 whence jack 12 is fixed in its centred position. The last L is also clamped to the jack by a support 228 which, under the action of fluid pressure on piston 234, engages with the top of the instep portion of the last. The jack 12 is mounted for rotation and variable oscillation on an arm 22 and also for rocking within its frame 50 by racks 126, and gear 130. The movement of jack 12 to its centred position acts through rack 204 which is attached to the holder 102, pinions 202, 198 and rack 196 on a bar 176 mounted for sliding in the base 50, rotation of bar 176 being prevented. The movement of bar 176 acts through links including racks 214, 216, a gear 212 and a Bowden cable 218 to position the switch MS5 which is then locked in position by fluid pressure acting through 242 and a plunger 232 on a washer 230 which clamps against piston rod 164 this being part of the aforesaid link. The switch MS5 is triggered by engagement with a slide 144 which supports a fulcrum block 96 and piston rod 147 by a stud 143. The movement of fulcrum block 96 is effected by fluid pressure in cylinder 148 which movement is terminated on the triggering of switch MS5 whence the piston rod 147 is locked in position by fluid in cylinders 150 and 148. The construction and movements of the machine in operation after the above adjustments have been performed are similar to those described in Specification 795,097. The operation is, however, step by step, more automatically controlled in that the depression of the treadle 290 trips a clutch and further operation of the machine is sustained mainly by the tripping of switches which activate solenoid operated valves 156, 208, 246, 260. Lever 278 must, however, be thrown manually to effect the movement of cutter head 10 and switch MS2 manually depressed. Fluid pressure is derived from a motor and pump 248. On the termination of a working cycle pressure fluid enters cylinder 166 which by the link of piston rod 164, having been unclamped, yoke 170, roller 174 and bar 176 returns jack 12 to its loading position. The operation of the automatic electrical control system in conjunction with the switches is explained in detail in the Specification. Specification 863,464 also is referred to.
