Abstract

1,001,642. Shoe bottom presses. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Oct. 30, 1961 [Nov. 1, 1960], No. 38681/61. Heading A3B. A pad box comprises forepart, shank and heel pad assemblies 27, 29, 31 moveable relative to one another and supported on trays 24, 25, 26 respectively. When the shoe has no heel attached thereto the heel pad comprises a rubber heel filler block 32 resting on a U-shaped pad 34, which filler block 32 is replaced, when the shoe has a heel attached thereto, by a heel supporting block 114 (Fig. 5) which is moved into a position on the U-shaped pad 34 as the pad box is moved towards heel and toe abutments 86, 84. The shank tray 25 is pivoted on a shaft 40 fixed in a frame 42 of the pad box and is hingedly connected to the forepart tray 24 by a link 44 which is mounted for restricted longitudinal movement relative to the shank tray 25. The heel tray 26 comprises two forks 35 which are supported on a pin 62 extending through slots in the shank tray 25. Two arms 47 supporting the heel tray 26 and an arm 56, having a slot 59 in it through which a stud 60 fixed in the shank tray 25 passes, are fixed to a shaft 57 rotatably mounted in the frame 42 and serve as balancing members to correlate the movement between the shank and heel trays. A similar balancing mechanism is provided for the forepart and shank trays wherein the forepart tray 24 rests on a pin 64 secured between two balancing arms 66 pivoted in the frame 42 and extending beneath the shank tray. The shoe on the pad box is brought rapidly and under low pressure into engagement with the abutment devices 84, 86 whereas a higher pressure is slowly exerted during the sole attaching operation. The abutment devices 84, 86 are balanced by a walking beam 100 pivoted on a shaft 102 secured in a bracket 104 and are automatically adjusted to accommodate different sizes of shoes. As the shoe is raised, a feeler roll 186 mounted between two arms 180 which are mounted on shaft 102 and which are connected through a yielding linkage to the toe abutment 84, contacts the cone of the last and is moved to cause the toe abutment to be moved away from the heel abutment to a position appropriate to a particular size of shoe. The heel supporting mechanism which is rendered inoperative when a shoe without a heel is operated upon comprises a reciprocating bar 116 carrying the heel supporting block 114 and mounted for horizontal movement in a carriage 120. A linkage 134 moves the bar 116 and block 114 into engagement with the heel when the pad box is raised and two ratchet bars 118, 122 are engaged to lock the heel supporting block in position when pressure is exerted on the pad box. Specification 936,294 is referred to.
