Abstract
A shoe last incorporating an information storage device for containing coded information in a form capable of being read by shoemaking machinery with which the last is to be used, whereby the machinery can adapt itself to cooperate with the last and/or workpiece mounted thereon. The storage device is conveniently an integrated circuit device or a bar code display.
Description
"SHOE LAST"
This invention relates to the manufacture of shoes
In the manufacture of shoes a last is the fundamental form on which shoe components are assembled and a typical assembly process involves the use of a series of machines for operations such as lasting, roughing, cementing and sole attachment and so on.
These machines need to be adjusted to deal with a variety of last shapes, and these variations arise from a variety of requirements such as style, size and fitting. The machines have also to be adjusted to deal with a variety of materials used in shoe construction.
Additionally the lasts at present in use are manufactured in such a way that the accuracy required for an automated process cannot be achieved. To achieve the required accuracy would increase the cost of the lasts.
It is proposed, in accordance with the present invention, that each last be fitted with an integrated electronic circuit device or bar code which will store information on the dimensions of the last and that this information be extracted as required to enable the various machines and robotic devices to be automatically adjusted and by so doing eliminate the necessity for human intervention.
In addition it is proposed that other information such as the style and type of material being used be readily added to or deleted from the storage device.
Some of the stored information could also be used to enable the lasts to be tracked during the manufacturing process.
Thus, according to the invention there is provided a shoe last incorporating an information storage device for containing coded information in a form capable of being read by shoemaking machinery with which the last is to be used, whereby the machinery can adapt itself to cooperate with the last and/or workpiece mounted thereon, There is also provided shoemaking machinery incorporating a shoe last comprising an information storage device for containing coded information, and one or more automatic or semiautomatic tools arranged for cooperation with the last, said tool(s) being provided with reading means for receiving the coded information and control means activatable by the reading means for adjusting the tool(s) to adapt to the last and/or a workpiece mounted thereon.
Typically, the information storage device comprises an integrated circut, i.e. a "chip", on which coded information is, or is capable of being recorded. The complementary reading means will then comprise appropriate electronic means well known in that art.
Alternatively, the information storage device can comprise a bar code display, in which case the complementary reading means will comprise an optical scanning device as normally used in that art.
Claims (6)
1. A shoe last incorporating an information storage device for containing coded information in a form capable of being read by shoemaking machinery with which the last is to be used, whereby the machinery can adapt itself to cooperate with the last and/or workpiece mounted thereon.
2. A shoe last according to claim 1, in which the information storage device is in the form of an integrated electronic circuit device or a bar code display, the shoemaking machinery being equipped with complementary reading means.
3. Shoemaking machinery comprising a shoe last incorporating an information storage device for containing coded information, and one or more automatic or semiautomatic tools arranged for cooperation with the last, said tool(s) being provided with reading means for receiving the coded information and control means activatable by the reading means for adjusting the tool(s) to adapt to the last and/or a workpiece mounted thereon.
4. A last or machinery according to any of claims 1 to 3, in which the information storage device contains information as to the size and/or pattern of the last.
5. A last or machinery according to any of claims 1 to 4 in which the information storage device contains information as to the style, type of material or other characteristics of a workpiece mounted on the last.
6. A last or machinery substantially as herein described.
