Abstract

1,004,381. Heel attaching machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. May 17, 1962 [May 19, 1961], No. 18996/62. Heading A3B. A heel attaching machine is automatically fed with heels from a magazine 166 by delivery means which moves a heel 20 to a transfer station 240 where the heel is transferred to a cavity in a carrier 32 which takes the heel to the heel attaching station 26. The magazine 166 consists of a U-shaped body 164 of flexible material, the side walls of which can be moved towards and away from each other by bell-cranks 200 and a screw 198 to accommodate heels of different sizes. The magazine has a door 206 which has a spring loaded plate 226 which positions the heels 20 when the door is closed. The plate 226 is held with the springs 230 compressed by a pawl and rachet (not shown) and a spring loaded plunger 216 moves the door 206 to leave a clearance between the plate 226 and the heels 20. The heels fall under gravity through a U-shaped aperture in the bottom of the magazine on to a table 168 where they are gripped by arms 262. The arms 262 are mounted on a slide 156 which is movable from a position under the magazine to the transfer station 240 by the piston rod 306 of a piston and cylinder (not shown). The arms 262 are normally urged towards each other to grip a heel by a spring 290 but are held open when under the magazine to receive a heel by an extension 300 of one arm 262 engaging a stop 304. When the heel arrives at the transfer station 240 it is oriented by a spring loaded bar 282 and a presser foot 252 operated by piston and cylinder 244 presses the heel into a heel form 32 which is carried by a slide 76 which is moved by a piston and cylinder 84 between the transfer station 240 and the heel attaching station 26 at which a heel 20 is positioned above a nailing die 28. A base lift (not shown) may be positioned above the heel 20 and is held by arms 60 of a conventional base lift gauge. The machine has a control circuit and operates as follows:- at the completion of a heel attaching cycle the empty heel form 32 is at the heel attaching station 26 and a heel 20 is held by the arms 262 at the transfer station. Removal of the completed shoe from the machine causes the heel form 32 to move to the transfer station 240 where the presser foot 252 presses the heel into the heel form 32 which then moves back to the nailing station 26. As the heel form 32 returns, the slide 156 moves the arms 262 to a position below the magazine 166 where they receive a heel 20 and then moves back to the transfer station with the heel. The machine then comes to rest in readiness for another heel attaching cycle.
