Abstract
630,407. Shoe-upper conforming-apparatus. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Oct. 16, 1947, No. 27680. [Class 17 (i)] A fluid-pressure operated attachment is provided for a fluid-pressure operated toe-end lasting machine such as is described in Specifications 553,881, 574,397, 574,977 or 618,726. A shoe which has been cement-lasted is removed from the lasting position without waiting for the cement to be fully set and transferred to the attachment which presses the over-wiped margin of the upper on an insole against a flexible plate and, during the lasting of the next shoe, is operated to trim excess lasting margin. The attachment receives pressure fluid from a manifold 24, Fig. 14, for the trimming operation, but to clamp the shoe in position, with the lasting instrumentalies stationary, pressure fluid is supplied from an accumulator 84, which remains charged throughout. A toe pressure pad or rest 134 attached to a piston 136 is normally held down by springs 144 in a cylinder 138, Figs. 6, 14, and is moved upwards by fluid admitted from a pipe 164. through a valve 154 to press a shoe against a flexible pressure plate 100. The valve 154 is operated by a solenoid 166 when a switch 204 is closed by the toe of the shoe engaging a pad 202 the switch being held closed by a plunger 200 being engaged by a tip 224, Fig. 10, of a bell-crank lever 222, which is held up by a spring 232 when the piston as it rises engages a member 228 passing through the cylinder 138. The plate 100 has a recess 102, Fig. 8, so that only the margin of the shoe is covered and the shoe is initially positioned by rollers 112 and lengthwise by flexible plates 120 adjustable for different shoe sizes by their mounting 122. Roughening at 218 stops the pad 134 displacing the shoe. The trimming knife 234, Figs. 6, 10, in a holder 236 is pivotally mounted at 246 in arms 238 of bell-crank levers 240 mounted at 242 and rigidly joined by a web 244. Spring plungers 248 hold the holder 236 against lugs 250, Fig. 6, so that on a downward swing of the levers 240, controlled by a cylinder 260 automatically operated during the next lasting operation, the knife has an initial downward component until the fingers in advance of the knife contact the plate 100 so that the knife swings towards the horizontal and advances along the plate severing the surplus projecting margin of the upper. Means are provided to actuate the attachment by hand to completa the operations on the last shoe without running the lasting instrumentalities. An inclined plate 282 of an ejector 284 is pivotally mounted at 286 to an arm 288 mounted between the levers 240 and is held against the knife 234 by a plunger 290. A spring 300 connected to a lever 296 normally holds the arm as in Fig. 10 but, on the upward movement of a link 256, a catch 308 springs over a pawl 310 so that on the return stroke the ejector moves forward over the knife to force the trimmings into a trough 322. In operation, as soon as a shoe is released after lasting it is introduced under the plate 100 and as it contacts the pad 202 the switch 216 closes the solenoid 166 to operate the valve 154 and admit fluid from the accumulator 84 to the cylinder 138, to move the pad 134 to hold the shoe against the plate 100. At the same time a spring 232 is compressed to hold the switch 216 closed. The next shoe is then introduced into the lasting machine and during toe-end lasting operations on it the trimming knife 234 and ejector 280 are automatically actuated. Towards the end of the cycle of operations, a switch is opened which opens the solenoid 166 so that the valve 154 permits the release of fluid from the cylinder 138 so that the shoe rest 134 is returned by springs 144 and the shoe is released into a receiver 344.
