Abstract
1,007,775. Lasting machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. May 17, 1962 [May 19, 1961], No. 18995/62. Heading A3B. A toe lasting machine comprises a support arranged to support a shoe, comprising an upper and an insole assembled on a last, bottom upwards in the machine, a wiper head movable heightwise relative to a shoe supported in the machine and adapted in such relative movement to shape the upper around the toe end portion of the last, and an upper engaging member arranged to be moved into an operative position during such relative movement to engage the upper to cause a pull to be exerted on the upper to stretch the upper about the last, and to be moved into an inoperative position, remote from the upper and the toe end of the last, consequent upon the cessation of such relative movement. By pressing a knee switch a toe pad 32 rises and a heel clamp 34 moves inwardly to clamp the shoe against a triangular shoe rest 30 with serrated bosses on its lower surface and with means to adjust its plane about the two horizontal axes, and against a retarder 24 consisting of two arcuately shaped blades each adjustably secured to a block 156 pivotly connected to a block 160. A pawl 310 (Fig. 12) also moves upwardly to lock the toe pad in position through a mechanism consisting of a rack 296, and toothed quadrants 298 and 302. The heel clamp is adjustably mounted on one end of two posts 332 connected at their other ends by a cross-piece 336 connected to the piston rod of a cylinder 348 and having, as a locking device, a pawl 360 and ratchet plate 370. By actuating a first control switch a toe band 22, similar to that in Specification No. 976,625, is urged, at its ends and by pressure pads on either side of its mid-point, around the upper, the retarder block 156 lowers the retarder to yieldingly clamp the upper against the toe band and an insole engaging member 26, similarly pivoted to a slide 212 on the block 160, is lowered on to the insole. The wiping head mounted on a table 54, pivoted at one end on the frame, is now raised by a piston rod 62, yieldingly connected to the table, so that the upper is upwiped. After this upwiping the retarder 24 and member 26 are removed right away from the shoe by the block 160 rotating on its pivot 166 so that any trimming and/or cementing operations can be carried out on the lasting margin and insole. By actuating a second control switch the block 160 swings back to its original position and wipers 20 advance and close. Variable bedding pressure is applied according to the position of the wipers and the shape of a particular cam which is mounted on the wipers' control rod and which controls the amount of air pressure reaching cylinder 80 which raises and lowers the table 54 and thus the wiping head. As the wipers complete their closing movement they push the member 26 away about a pivot pin 217. For pretrimmed and precemented shoes the fluid circuit is so arranged that by initially operating the second control means instead of the first the machine will go through the operation cycle without interruption. A control valve allows the retarder 24 and the member 26 to be swung to their inoperative position at any time if necessary. Specification 976,625 is referred to.
