Cigarettes to be loaded into the hopper (3), Fig. 2 (not shown), of a cigarette packing machine are supplied manually in trays to a magazine 30, which is positioned obliquely so that the trays slide by gravity on rollers 35 against a movable shoulder member 31. A pneumatic cylinder 36 moves the foremost tray one tray's breadth forward, the subsequent tray being held by members 32. The first tray is then moved fractionally further and is engaged by a pneumatically operated pusher 33, which lifts the tray on guide rods 38 into the pocket 42 of a pivoting device 40. As a pneumatic cylinder 41 draws the pocket 42 to the left as seen in Fig. 1, a member 45 engages a slot 47 of a further pusher member 46. The pocket 42 is then pivoted to a vertical position at which grippers 51 engage the tray and transfer it to a position at which the cigarettes are unloaded into the hopper by conventional means. The grippers 51 then return the emptied tray to its previous position from which it is pushed by the member 46 out of the way of the next oncoming tray as the pocket 42 is again pivoted to the left as seen in Fig. 1. The empty tray engaged by the pusher 46 is gripped by brushes 63, and is subsequently pushed by succeeding trays into the control of friction rollers (65), Fig. 4 (not shown), or hooks (66), Fig. 5 (not shown).
