Cigarettes are fed by an endless belt conveyer 208 into position beneath a suction head 201 (Fig. 21, not shown) which lifts the cigarettes into engagement with its lower face, a pusher member 216 then engaging the ends of the cigarettes of the row and displacing the complete row into position upon a previous row in a container 210. The pusher 216 comprises a support portion 216 which moves into position beneath the cigarette while the pusher member proper is held stationary by the action of friction grip springs on a fixed pin 218. When a stop 226 of the member 216 picks up a stop 225 of the pusher 224 the latter moves forward with the continuing movement of the member 216 and engages the ends of the cigarettes to push them forward into position above the previous row in the container 210 (Fig. 22, not shown). The head 215 which imparts movement to the member 216 has mounted in it slidably a sleeve 244 having end stops 248, 249. Slidably mounted within the sleeve 244 is a rod 236 normally urged to the right by a spring 236. At its other end the rod 229 carries a member 232 which mounts an upper guide 234 for the row of cigarettes and a stop 233 which backs up against the previously deposited row to maintain these in position. On retraction of the member 216 the pusher 224 is again held in position for the time being by the action of the springs on the pin 218 and thus acts to strip the row and leave it deposited on the previous row in the container 210. The member 232 is retracted by the action of the spring 236 and the rest of the parts resume their original positions. In (Fig. 8), a row of cigarettes C (only one visible in the Figure) is engaged by a pusher 123 and deflected into a container (not shown). The pusher 123 is associated with a support member 122. The member 122 is initially moved towards the cigarettes, the pusher 123 being held by the action of friction grip members 127. When due to relative movement between the member 122 and the pusher 123 a pin 124 reaches the end of a slot 122 in the member 121, the pusher 123 is positively deflected against the action of the friction members 127 and moves into engagement with the ends of the cigarettes C. Continued movement brings the cigarettes into position over the previous row in the container 115. On the return movement of the member 121 the pusher 123 is held by the friction members 127 and acts to hold the cigarettes from return movement during the retraction of the support member 121. A further modification is described which is identical with that described with reference to Figs. 5-10 of Specification 1,024,784.
