Abstract
928,482. Forming batches of laminar articles. T. & T. VICARS Ltd. Oct. 25, 1961 [Nov. 8, 1960; Feb. 25, 1961], Nos. 38245/60 and 6994/61. Class 94(1). A laminar article feeding machine has a channel 11 receiving a continuous stream of articles 10, e.g. biscuits, in stacked relationship, a cup 12 containing a plunger 15 displaceable against spring 16 by the pressure of the articles to allow a batch of articles to enter the cup, and a cut-off block 21 movable to segregate the batch from the stack and move it out of alignment therewith whilst simultaneously constituting an abutment to arrest forward movement of the stack, the leading edge 28 of the channel 11 and the adjacent face 27 of block 21 being relatively adjustable to define a gap X approximately equal to the thickness of an article 10. The cup 12 has two spring biased levers, Fig. 3, which are forced apart on lowering of block 21 to move a batch into cups 23 of a packaging machine, the block being lowered when a guide 17, Fig. 4, sliding on rod 20 and fixed to plunger rod 18 hits a stop 19, the stop being adjustable for different size batches. The gap X is adjusted by a vernier on channel 11 and ensures that a batch separates from the stack always along a line between consecutive articles, Figs 6-8 (not shown). The levers of cup 12 may have spring loaded extrusions Fig. 5 (not shown), to support an article which may just bridge gap X when a batch is accommodated in the cup. To by-pass the articles should a fault occur in the packing machine for example, a piston rod 30, Fig. 4, with draws plunger 15 and the articles drop on to an extended telescopic shoot 33, Fig. 1, which leads to conveyers 36, 37. A collector box 38 and deflector 39 may be provided beneath shoot 33. In the first Provisional Specification the batches of articles are moved into cups on an endless belt which carries them to a depositing station adjacent the cups of a packing machine,
