Abstract

1,019,713. Bundling-machines. R. A. LOMBARDE. Aug. 1, 1962 [Feb. 14, 1962], No. 29503/62. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B6] A machine for stacking and bundling .flat articles such as collapsed tubular cartons- 41 comprises lower carrier means 62 to advance a stack of articles horizontally from a stacking station 26 through a tying station 27 to a discharge station 28; a hopper 49 mounted over the carrier at. the stacking station; upper carrier and pressure means 87 extending horizontally from the stacking station and through the tying station; indexing means to advance the upper and lower carrier means a predetermined distance, and counting means at the stacking station to actuate the indexing means when a predetermined number of articles has accumulated in said hopper. Collapsed cartons 41 advance in shingled formation along a conveyer 29, which may be raised to permit manual bundling and tying when desired, to a conveyer 44 above which is situated a pair of adjustable hold-down rolls 51. To ensure that the cartons descend in the hopper 49 horizontally, a roll 59 having a peripheral speed considerably greater than that of the conveyer 44 is provided frictionally to engage each carton and advance it over the open top of the hopper 49. A photo-electric device 184, 185 (Fig. 5, not shown) counts the cartons as they pass into the hopper 49, and when a predetermined number has passed through, actuates a switch to advance the stack out of the hopper. The edges of the cartons are aligned by laterally and longitudinally adjustable pushers 160, 161 (Fig. 5, 6, not shown) and are gripped between upper and lower belts 87, 62 the indexing of which is initiated by the switch actuated by the counting mechanism. Advancement of the stack pushes open gates 191, 192 (Fig. 6, not shown) co-extensive in height with the hopper. Simultaneously rods 204, 207 and bell-crank levers 206, 208 (see also Fig. 4, not shown) (in the case of short cartons) and/or trapdoors 215, 216 (in the case of long cartons) are advanced into the path of the next following cartons; the cartons are allowed to fall to the bottom of the hopper when gates 191, 192 close again. The counted stacks are compressed between the moving belts 87, 62 as they advance to conventional knot-tying means, 120. The hopper rear and side walls 57, 55, 56 (Fig. 4, not shown), the height of the rods 204, 207 and trapdoors 215, 216, the distance between the conveyers 62, 87, and the frames at each side thereof are all adjustable by power-operated means. The upper conveyer 87, tying means 120, pusher arms 160, 161 and gates 191 and 192 may be disconnected so that the machine may be used simply to form counted stacks of cartons, and the lower conveyer may then index forwardly or advance continuously, the stacks being accumulated on the trapdoors.
