Abstract

1,253,140. Stacking articles; delivering sheets. HENRY SIMON Ltd. 29 June, 1970 [24 July, 1969], No. 37202/69. Headings B8C and B8R. A method of forming a stack of cases from a moving line of cases in shingled configuration, comprises the steps of providing means to engage the trailing edge of a ease in the line and progressing the means forwardly at a speed greater than the speed of movement of the line so that successive trailing edges are in turn engaged by the means whereby that portion of the line forward of the first mentioned trailing edge is gathered to form a stack of horizontal superimposed cases. As shown, a line of collapsed cases L is fed by a conveyer C at the output stage of a case making machine, to spaced conveyer belts 10, beneath which at opposite sides thereof are located pairs of chain drives 12, 16 all driven simultaneously and carrying arms which can move through spaces between the belts 10 and which are secured to bars 23, 24. A door 26 forms an abutment for. the forward end of the line of cases and is heldclosed by a magnetic catch. 28. The arrangement is such that as the arms 25 are moved by the chain drives 12, 16 from the Fig. 1 position through the Fig. 3 position to the Fig. 4 position a predetermined number of cases are stacked against the door 26. Further movement of the arms pushes the stack beyond the door against the holding force of the catch 28 and the arms then descend through the slots between the belts and return to the starting position. The number of cases in each stack is determined by a counting device 29. In another arrangement, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), L-shaped members carried by a chain drive at each side of the machine have one of their arms guided in tracks, to raise the other arm to move relative to and upwardly through the spaces between the belts. At the discharge end of the machine a restraining device is raised by the first stack passing through the machine, the stack being subsequently pushed onwards by the succeeding stack.
