964,394. Feeding and delivering sheets. R. HEPP. May 30, 1962 [June 1, 1961], No. 20786/62. Headings B6B and B6H. A method of collating sheets comprises the steps of displacing a plurality of sheets folded along a line in a predetermined direction parallel to said line along a transport path, partially unfolding said sheets, and depositing a second sheet upon each of said first-mentioned sheets by displacing said second sheet above said first-mentioned sheet in said predetermined direction at the speed of said first-mentioned sheets. Folded sheets A, Figs. 2 and 4, are fed in succession from the bottom of a pile by a feed drum carrying rotating suction rollers 2 on to a table where they rest until engaged by abutments 4 on chains of a conveyer 3. The number of sheets moved along as a pile by each pair of abutments is controlled by a variable-speed clutch 5 determining the relative speed of the feed drum and the conveyer. The abutments convey the sheet or pile of sheets to an unfolding device comprising chains 10, 35, Fig. 5, moving at the same speed as the conveyer 3 and carry - ing suction heads 8, 34. The upper flap of the sheet is raised to clear an unfolding tongue 15 and a guide plate 9 then opens the sheet so that one flap is vertical, in which condition the sheet approaches a collating station whereat sheets from a stack B are deposited by a feed drum arrangement the same as that shown in Fig. 4 on chains 19 having abutments which pass them between a drum 22 and synchronously moving band 24 so as to approach the sheet on the conveyer 3 while moving at the same horizontal speed. In another form, Fig. 8, sheets J are deposited on the sheets on the conveyer 3 in varying positions, i.e. adjacent the front or rear thereof, passing between a drum 30 and band 32 and then between a drum 33 and similar band. The sheets are fed at the desired times by a swinging suction arm 29 controlled by a cam. The assembly of sheets then passes beyond the plate 9 and the vertical flap is replaced by a plurality of blowers. The suction to the head 8 may be cut off, rendering the plate 9 inoperative, so that sheets B are deposited on unopened sheets A.
