Abstract
690,809. Sheet-delivery apparatus. HEAD WRIGHTSON MACHINE CO., Ltd., LAKE, N. C., and BATTY. F. A.. Oct. 31. 1950 [Nov. 2, 1949], No. 28113/49. Class 100(i) [Also in Groups XIX and XXX] Apparatus for classifying sheets both of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and other substances comprises a feed conveyer on to which the sheets to be classified are fed and other conveyers arranged in two or more independently operating groups and including sections moving at successively reduced speeds for operation in conjunction with one or more diverter gates by which sheets from the feed conveyer are transferred to a selected group of the other conveyers, and suction means arranged at intervals throughout the length of said other conveyers for holding the sheets in position on these conveyers. The figures show the application to a plant wherein the sheets are cut from a metal strip which is unwound from a coil 1, passed through a series of rollers 3, a group of rollers 4 for trimming the sheet to the required width, flattening rollers 5, and then finally cut into sections by a cutter 6. The successive sheets are then graded into different piles according to their gauge and this is effected by a classifying unit indicated generally at 7 and consisting of three groups of endless belt conveyers on to one of which a sheet is diverted by gates controlled by a " flying " micrometer 8. The sheets from the cutter 6 are first received by a belt conveyer A mounted on rollers X, Y, Z. A sheet of standard gauge passes from this conveyer over gates G, G<SP>2</SP> to a series of conveyers A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>3</SP>, A<SP>4</SP>, A<SP>5</SP>. When a sheet of smaller or greater gauge than standard passes over the micrometer 8, an electrical impulse is transmitted from the latter to mechanism controlling the gates G, G<SP>2</SP> and one of these is opened whereby the sheet is diverted either to the series of conveyers B, B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> or to C, C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP>. Each conveyer in these series of conveyers travels at a lower speed than the preceding one, and the sheets fall off the last conveyer of each series to be collected in a pile or stack. The sheets are secured to the conveyer belts by suction applied through nozzles N connected to a main suction conduit P. Each conveyer preferably comprises two spaced bands, D, Fig. 4, formed with holes H overlying slots S formed in the surface plate K of each nozzzle, the belt resting on this plate. Each conveyer may however comprise a single band formed with transverse slots cooperating with longitudinal slots in the face plate of the nozzle. Specification 478,448 is referred to.
