Abstract

1327882 Forming and conveying stacks of flat articles WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER 4 May 1971 [19 May 1970] 13019/71 Heading B8C Apparatus, for forming and conveying stacks of flat articles such as flattened bags, tubular sections, or sacks W, comprises a stack conveyer 1 on to which the articles W are successively thrown from the discharge end of a supply conveyer 19 to stack up against an aligning stop 12 while the stack conveyer 1 is not feeding, the stop 12 being movable out of the path of the completed stack St before the stack conveyer 1 is started to transport the stack to a discharge conveyer 10 and the conveyer 1 being intermittently lowered during stacking in dependence of the stack being formed. Located between the discharge conveyer 10 and the stack conveyer 1 is an intermediate conveyer 3 the upstream end of which is lowerable in unison with the stack conveyer 1 and the downstream end of which remains at substantially the same level as the discharge conveyer 10. With the conveyer 1, in its uppermost position and consisting of a plurality of parallel belts mounted in a vertically slidably mounted frame 4, as soon as the articles pile up on the conveyer 1 a sensor 13 on the stop 12 is struck by the following articles W to close a switch 14 which energizes a motor 27 to lower the conveyer 1 until the sensor 13 is released and lowering of the conveyer 1 is interrupted until the next few articles again press the sensor 13. When the number of articles, preset on an impulse generator 16, has been counted by a feeler 18 the generator 16 closes a switch which, through an adjustable time delay, operates mechanism 29 to pivot the stop 12 to an upper horizontal position above the stack St. Simultaneously an electromechanical clutch 35, Fig. 2, is operated so that the conveyer 1 is caused to rotate with the intermediate conveyer 3, which is continuously driven by a chain transmission 36 so that the conveyer 1 starts to feed the stack on to the intermediate conveyer 3. After the stack has passed a feeler 20 the motor 27 is energized to rotate in a direction which lifts the conveyer 1, elevation of the two conveyers 1, 3 terminating when an abutment 17 opens a switch 15. Release of the feeler 20 also pivots the stop 12 downwardly into the path of the next stack to be formed. The stop 12 is operated by a pneumatic cylinder 30 carried by a displaceable bearing 32 which can be clamped by a screw 33 on a frame 4 to set the stop according to the size of the article being stacked, the stop 12 being adjustable along a slot 21, the adjustment simultaneously moving the feeler 20 along a slot 22. The speeds of the conveyers 1, 3 and 10 are preferably equal.
