[Class 78 (v)] Apparatus for laying, and taking up, cable, wire &c. is mounted on a vehicle so that as the vehicle progresses the cable &c. is power expelled, thus enabling it to be flung rapidly, and, if desired, laterally. The cable drum 18 is mounted removably on a shaft 23 journalled at 22 and carrying at its further end a brake drum 24 having a pulley groove on its periphery. An I.C. motor 50 mounted above and forward of the drum 18 adjustably on a platform 43 drives the pulley 29 through a belt from a pulley 83 on the motor shaft 56, when cable is to be wound on the drum 18, a starting pulley 84 being also provided. On the opposite side of the shaft 56 is a grooved rubber-tyred wheel 57 which co-operates with a spring-pressed idler wheel 60 to grip the cable 68 and eject it through a guide 70. The wheel 60 is carried in a housing 61 which can be adjusted vertically on a frame 53, and has pivoted to it at 75 the spring-biased support 72 for the guide 70, which is in the form of a ring adjustably mounted on the support 72, the angle of adjustment determining the angle at which the cable is cast off. The motor 50 is movable to and fro along the platform 43 by a spring-retracted brake handle 36 pivoted at 37 and connected to the platform by a telescopically adjustable rod 51. The position of the motor and its Wheel 57 determines whether the cable is being gripped between the wheels 57 and 60, and being cast off, or not, and the to and fro motion effects tilting of the support 72 by an incline acting on a roller 77. The support 72 has a projecting pin 82 which holds the cable 68 off the motor wheel 57 when this is withdrawn from co-operation with the wheel 60. The whole apparatus can be turned about a vertical axis through 360‹ on a base 11 adjustably mounted on a vehicle by extensible grippers 14, 15.
