[Also in Group XXVIII] A flame-cutting machine for dividing a rotating and simultaneously axially-moving pipe 3 is arranged to move axially with the pipe and has two rotatable chucks 8 for gripping the pipe, connected through a speed reduction drive 14 with a rotatably mounted cutting torch 15 which is capable of making two complete revolutions in the machine. The machine is of particular use in dividing helically-jointed pipe during its manufacture and is mounted on wheels 1 running along rails 2. The wheels are adjustable in height by a hand wheel 5 coupled to an indicator 6 to suit different diameters of pipe. Chucks 8 have jaws 9 actuated by an electric motor to grip the moving pipe. The torch 15 is carried by pivoted arms 16, Fig. 2 (not shown), from a rotatably mounted ring 13, and is spring-biased towards the pipe to a position determined by a feeler 17. Ring 13 is initially connected directly with the right-hand chuck by a magnetic coupling, thereby causing the torch to rotate at the same speed as the pipe for starting the cut. The direct drive is then replaced by a reduction drive effected by gearing 11, 12 14 to cause relative rotation of the torch and pipe whereby the latter is divided whilst making three revolutions. Flexible gassupply pipes 18, connected to the torch, pass around the ring 13 from a rotary winding-up device 19, Fig. 2, biased by a counterweight 24. After cutting the jaws are released and the machine is then retracted by an electric winch 27.
