Abstract

Apparatus for cutting tubes comprises a rotary cutting tool 22 which effects a planetary movement in a single revolution about a tube 7 to be cut and is mounted on a swivel arm 18 enabling engaging and disengaging of the tool with the tube and adjustment of the tool to cut tubes of various diameters, and a tracing member 25 connecting the swivel arm with a control member 23 for moving the tool into and out of engagement with the tube, the control member being rotatable, during the cutting process, in the same direction as the planetary movement of the cutting tool so that the tool is in engagement with the tube over a circular path exceeding 360 degrees. The apparatus is mounted on a stand 1 which is located after a tube pull-off machine 1 and has guide beams 3 for a cutting head 4 driven by reduction gearing 5 from a motor 6. The cutting head, which is connected to the tube 7 to be cut by clamping device 8 operated by compressed-air cylinders 9 during a cutting operation, has a rotor 12 rotatable on needle roller bearing 11 in a housing 10 by gearing 27, 30 driven from the unit 5. The cutter 22 is mounted on a shaft 19 at the end of the swivel arm 18 which is pivotally mounted on a shaft 16 connected by a belt 21 to the shaft 19 and driven by a gear 17 engaging a gear 15 on a quill 13 connected by belts 14 to the unit 5. The control member is in the form of a cam ring 23 rotatable in the housing 10 by gearing 26 from the unit 5 and has an inwardly-facing track engaged by the tracing roller 25 which is carried on an arm 24 of adjustable length mounted on the swivel arm 18, a spring acting on the arm 18 to urge the roller 25 into engagement with the cam track. In operation, the tube is fed from the machine 1 through the cutting head 4 until its leading edge actuates a control device to cause the clamps 8 to engage the tube so that the head travels with the tube along the beams 3. When the head is moved, the rotor 12 is rotated by the gear 27 and the tracer roller 25 moves from a recess 29 in the cam ring to cause the cutter to engage the tube. As the cutter moves in a planetary movement around the tube, the cam ring is moved a short distance in the same direction so that the cutter moves through more than 360 degrees before the tracer roller re-engages the recess 29 to disengage the cutter from the tube. The clamping devices 8 are then released to permit the cutter head to be returned to its initial position.
