Abstract

1280107 Reel supports L SPARKES 30 Nov 1970 [8 May 1970] 22272/70 Heading B8M [Also in Division A1] A cable or hose winding device mounted on a wheeled carriage comprises a shaft 7 supporting a cable reel 1 coaxially for rotation with the shaft, at least one drive wheel 8 attached to or integral with the shaft 7 and coaxial therewith, and a movable support for the shaft 7 permitting free rotation of the shaft about a horizontal axis, the support having an operative position in which the or each wheel 8 engages the periphery of a ground-engaging wheel 17 of the associated carriage, and an inoperative position in which the drive wheel 8 is out of engagement with the ground-engaging wheel 17. The movable support comprises a U-shaped frame having a cross-bar 11 and arms 12. Each arm 12 is bifurcated at its end 13 to provide a support for the shaft 7. A handle 18 is attached to the cross-bar 11. The support also comprises a shaft 14 passing through holes in the ends of the arms 12 remote from the bifurcated ends 13. The shaft 14 is pivotally attached to crank arms 15 which in turn are pivotally attached to the axles 16 of the ground-engaging wheels 17. The support is moved between its operative and inoperative positions by means of a manual control comprising a lever 19, rod 20 and crank 21 attached to the shaft 14. The support may be locked in its inoperative position by means of a lever 25 which is spring-biased to clamp the rod 20, the clamp being released by means of a plunger 28. The support may be moved to a further position in which in its inoperative position, a brake is applied to the flange 2 of the reel 1 or to the shaft 7. In a preferred embodiment, a cable 4 is wound on the reel 1, one end of which cable is attached to a socket 5 mounted on a flange 2 of the reel, and the other end of which cable carries a plug 6. The drive wheels 8 are preferably of the same diameter as the cable-receiving surface 3 of the reel 1 whereby the surface 3 is driven at the same linear speed as the ground-engaging wheels 17. The wheeled carriage may be separate from or form part of a machine on which the reel is to be used, e.g. electrically driven lawn-mower or hedge-cutter or power tool.
