Abstract

830,544. Controlling vehicles. STANLEY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and REARDON, J. C. Dec. 30, 1957 [Jan. 1, 1957], No. 21/57. Class 79(5) A tiller arm 2, Fig. 1, for steering an electrically propelled vehicle has a twist grip 2a, for controlling the forward andreverse speeds of the motor, provided with a stop to prevent inadvertent movement from a forward to a reverse position. The arm 2 is mounted at the upper end of a vertical sleeve 22 coupled through steering linkage members 24, 25, 26 to the front wheel mounting 27 so that movement of the arm 2 in a horizontal plane effects steering. The arm 2 further effects braking when pivoted in a vertical plane to operate a flexible brake cable 28. The motor control comprises rotary switches 3-6, Fig. 2, enclosed in a casing 1 and operated by a control rod 7 coaxial with the arm 2 and keyed for rotary movement therewith through square section end part 11. Inadvertent rotation of the arm 2 from the forward to reverse position is prevented by stepped engaging members 14, 15 which are releasable by sliding the arm 2 longitudinally against a spring 18. An indicator scale 12 visible through an aperture 13 in the casing indicates the speed setting. The control rod 7 is further located at each setting by a roller (not shown) mounted on a spring loaded lever 10 and engaging a sprocket 8 on the control rod 7. A horn button 19, trafficator switch 21 &c., may be mounted on the casing 1.
