Abstract
1336835 Bowden mechanisms; flexible shafts MATTEL Inc 10 July 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 32235/72 Headings F2K and F2U [Also in Divisions A6 and B7] A toy vehicle system comprises a toy vehicle, for example a toy aircraft 10 having a rotary propeller 16 and a controllable mechanism, and control means 12 supported independently of the aircraft and connected thereto by a flexible elongated coupling 20 including a rotatable shaft 30 within a sheath 32, the end of the shaft being connected to the propeller to rotate it and one end of the sheath being connected to the controllable mechanism to operate it by sliding of the sheath relative to the shaft. The shaft 30 is rotated by an electric motor 29 whose speed is controlled from a control box (14), Fig. 3 (not shown), by a lever (23) operating a rheostat (68); alternatively the shaft may be rotated by a hand-cranked member. A further lever (22) on the control box (14) causes yokes 42 to move a tube 38 to which one end of the sheath is connected, the other end being connected through links 52 and 58 to an elevator 18 to control the aircraft. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, a toy car has a driving wheel 106 rotated by flexible shaft 118 and a steered wheel 108 controlled by the movement of sheath 116, these being controlled respectively by button 128 and lever 126 on control box 104. The car has further rotatable wheels 112 which are slightly above the level of the wheels 106, 108, so that they prevent the car tipping over without tending to steer it.
