853,045. Motor vehicles. LEWIS-SHEPARD CO. Dec. 9, 1958 [Dec. 18, 1957], No. 39722/58. Classes 79(2), 79(3) and 79(5). [Also in Group; XXXII] In an electrically propelled fork-lift truck having two front wheels and two rear wheels, the rear wheels are independently driven and each wheel and its corresponding motor is connected by a separate resilient suspension to a platform rotatable under the control of a steering wheel mounted upon the truck body. The rotary member 13 is mounted for rotation upon the bearing 11 attached to the truck body and carries a worm ring which co-operates with a worm 14 driven through a shaft 16 and mechanism 17, 18 from a steering wheel mounted upon the truck body. To brackets 26 mounted upon the member 13 are pivoted arms 24 which are connected at their rear ends by turnbuckle links 29 to a member 30. The member 30 is pivotally attached to a block 35 which is connected to the member 13 by springs 36. Rods 35 limit the extension of and apply a predetermined tension to the springs 35. A housing 23, 41 is rigidly connected to each arm 24 and contains the wheel-bearings 22, 21 and a gear train for driving the wheel from a motor 40 which is mounted on each housing 41. The position assumed by the suspension when one wheel passes over an obstruction is shown in Fig. 5.
