Abstract

597,846. Motor forecarriages. SCOTT, E. M. Sept. 7, 1945, No. 23067. [Class 79 (iii)] In a three-wheeled vehicle of the kind in which the front steering wheel is driven by a battery driven motor or other power unit and the wheel and power means are combined as a single unit rotatably mounted on the chassis. The unit is mounted on a frame and slidable under spring control on pins or the like mounted on a ring or member rotatably mounted on a track ring on the vehicle chassis. As shown the front of the chassis comprises a channel-section frame 1 to which is attached a channel-section ring 4. The steering wheel 2 is mounted in a frame 8 comprising a pair of side plates 8b on top of which is mounted an electric motor 7. The wheel is driven through chains 13, 14, sprockets and a clutch. The wheel frame is provided at its lower end with brackets 23 which slidably engage four pins 17, said pins being provided with springs 18, 19 for shock absorption. The pins are attached to a pair of plates 16 which are welded to a second channel-section ring 3, the latter being rotatably mounted on the fixed ring 4 by means of rollers, 5, 5a, 6. The tension in the chains 13, 14 is adjustable by means of (a) a screw 25 which swings the motor about a pivot 20 and (b) by adjusting the wheel axle 22 in its housing by a further screw 26. The vehicle is steered by means of the usual steering wheel 12a mounted on a cowl 10 to the chassis. The wheel 12a is geared to its steering column 9 which is attached to a frame 8a fixed to the rotating frame 3.
