925,032. Endless track vehicles. J. A. CUTHBERTSON. Feb. 15, 1962 [Feb. 15, 1961] No. 5549/61. Class 79(1) An endless-track attachment for motor vehicles comprises a frame which is secured to the underside of the vehicle and carries a plurality of endless-track sub-assemblies each including an endless-track 31 a entrained around two twin idler wheels 26a, 29a and a sprocket wheel 30a mounted on the axles 5, 6 in place of the normal road wheels. The sub-assemblies associated with the front axle 5 are steerable by the normal steering mechanism of the vehicle. A transverse beam 8 secured to each axle 5, 6 carries at each end a pivot arm 13a journalled on the lower end 11a of a rotatable steering shaft 10a. The idler wheels 29a are journalled on a shaft 27a carried by an arm 22a pivotably connected to the pivot arm 13a and connected by a helical spring 19a adjustably stressed by a nut 20a to a member 18a on the pivot arm 13a. The idler wheels 26a are journalled on a shaft 25a carried by a rocker arm 17a pivotally connected to the member 18a and supported by a compression spring 15a. Downward movement of the rocker arm 17a is limited by a U-shaped arresting member 23a. The endless tracks 31a comprise two rubber bands 32a sandwiched between transverse members 33a having upturned ends and grousers 35a riveted thereto. A draw-bar 37 mounted within bushes 36 carried by the transverse beams 8 engages the bushes by means of disc springs 39 permitting axial displacement. The draw-bar 37 carries coupling brackets 38 at its ends and includes an extension member 43 to accommodate vehicles of different wheel base. A steering arm 44a attached to the steering shaft 10a of each sub-assembly associated with the front axle 5 is coupled by a steering arm 45a pivoted on the transverse beam 8 to a transverse steering rod connected to the normal tie-rod 50 of the vehicle. Power assistance is provided by an hydraulic cylinder 49 coupled to one steering arm 45a and supplied with fluid by a valve operated by the normal steering action of the vehicle. One or both of the axles may be driven and the sub-assemblies associated with both axles may be steerable. The Provisional Specification states that by using one pair of sub-assemblies on one axle only the vehicle may be converted to a halftrack vehicle.
