Abstract
192,624. Kelly, A. J., and Rossiter, G. S. Feb. 28, 1922. Sledge velocipedes.-A vehicle for children's use and of the type adapted to be supported for travel upon either wheels or runners comprises a platform 2 and side frames formed of longitudinal members 4 secured to the platform and connected to the runners 5 by bolster members 7, 8. When supported by the runners 5, the vehicle is steered by a central runner 9 provided with a ground-engaging shoe 16 and a head 10 secured to a pillar 11 rotatably mounted in the platform 2 and provide'd with a handle 17. When desired, the vehicle may be supported by wheels 18, 19 mounted on axles 20, 21 which slide in vertical slots 22, 23 in the bolster members 7, 8 and are moved into the lower or operative position against the action of springs 33 by cams 36, 37 which engage antifriction wheels 38, 39 on the axles. The cams are secured to shafts 34, 35 rotatably mounted in the members 7, 8 and are operated by arms 40, 41 connected together and to a rod 43 pivoted to a control lever 44. The lower ends of the slots 22 are widened forwardly and rearwardly to permit the front axle 20 to turn about its centre where it is pivoted to a reach bar 25 which connects it to the rear axle 21 and also extends forwards to form a pivot for the pillar 27 of a steering wheel 32. Steering is !effected through a segmental pinion 28 on the pillar 27 and a corresponding rack 29 on the axle 20. The rear wheels are fixed to the rear axle 21 which is cranked at 52 and connected by pitman rods 53 to pedals 56 secured to depending arms 57 which allow the pedals to be moved backwards and forwards to propel the vehicle.
