Abstract

233,139. Taylor, C. H. May 6, 1924. Body motion and weight of rider, propelling by. -In horse velocipedes and like vehicles propelled by the body motion and weight of the rider, a seat or saddle support, such as a horse's body 5, is pivoted to a wheeled undercarriage or frame 6 forward of the seat or saddle 19, and a steering-post 25 is pivoted to the support in front of its pivot; a flexible torsion member 11 is provided between the steering-post and the steering road wheel 8, and mechanism is fitted between the support and the driving road wheels 7 for effecting the propulsion. As shown, the body 5 is adjustably pivoted at 10 to fixed front legs 9 and the torsion member 11 is in the form of a cee spring connected to the pillar 12 and to the steering-post 25 secured to the head 23. The hind legs 13 are connected to the rear of the body by an adjustable pivot 14, and their lower ends are jointed to oscillating arms 16 fitted with pawls for driving a ratchet-wheel 17 on the axle 15. During the downward movement of the saddle or seat the pawl on the forward arm effects the drive, and during the upward movement, brought about by the spring 11, the pawl on the rear arm is operative. The rider stands on rests 18 while the seat is being raised. A helical spring may be used in place of the cee-spring.
