Abstract

310,136. Kent, H. C. Feb. 28, 1928. Weight of rider, propelling by. - A horse or like velocipede, in which propulsion is effected by an up and down movement produced by the intermittent action of the weight of the rider, comprises a frame 1 having front and rear wheels 2, 3, and two parts 5, 8 pivoted together at 9, the part 5, which constitutes the hind legs, being connected at 6 to cranks 7 on the rear axle 4, while the front legs 8<a> rigid with the body part 8 are pivoted to a bar 10 &c. near the front axle, so that the body part 8 oscillates about the bar 10 as the cranks 7 rotate. The rider shifts his weight intermittently from the body 8 to stirrups or to rests 29 adjustably mounted on a bar 24, and the upward movement of the body 8 when the weight is on the rests 29 is effected by one or more springs, such as a tension spring 26, which is adjustably connected to an arm 25 on the bar 24, and to a cross-bar 27 adjustably engaging a rack 28 on the inner wall of the body. Alternatively, the body 8 may be raised by means of a lever pivoted to the bar 24 within the body 8 and actuated by stirrups, which are suspended from a cross-bar carried by the lever and adapted to slide in curved slots in the sides of the body; one or more springs may also be provided to assist the action. Instead of the legs 5 driving the rear axle 4 direct, chain gearing may be interposed between a crank axle and the axle 4.
