Abstract

1410004 Hand trucks; steering vehicles FORMULA TRUCKS Ltd 14 Sept 1972 [14 Sept 1971 21 April 1972] 42884/71 Headings B7B and B7H A wheeled truck such as a fork lift truck has a frame 1 with a pair of pivotally-mounted wheels 15, 16 and at least one other wheel 12, wherein one wheel 16 of the pair is steerable by a steering member 20 and the other wheel 15 of the pair is freely pivotable. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 1, the steering member 20 of a fork lift truck consists of a tow bar having a handle 21 and pivoted to fork 17<SP>1</SP> of wheel 16. The tow bar is spring-biased into its upright position. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the steerable wheel 26 is mounted together with an electric motor 27, which drives the wheel through epicyclic reduction gearing, on a pivotable carrier member 31. The steering member has control switches 34 which may be deactivated by a lock 35 in the control box 32. A further control box 37 is connected to the box 32 and motor 27 by cables 38, 39 which pass up the hollow steering column 28 and through the hollow shaft in the journal 30, respectively.
