Abstract

1,002,825. Steering and controlling industrial trucks. LANSING BAGNALL Ltd. Feb. 6, 1963 [Feb. 7, 1962], No. 4808/62. Heading B7H. In an industrial truck comprising a steerable sub-frame 14 which is mounted at one end of a chassis 11 and carries an electric motor driving a ground wheel 15 by means of a chain, a guide wheel 22 mounted on an arm 21 pivotally connected to the motor casing 17 can be swung into engagement with a guide rail 23 so that lateral movements of the guide wheel 22 are transmitted through the arm 21 to steer the ground wheel 15. The guide wheel 22 is mounted in a bracket 24 pivotally connected about an upright axis to the arm 21 and springs 25 are arranged to retain the guide wheel 22 either in or out of engagement with the guide rail. A control handle 18 carries controls 19 for the electric motor and for an hydraulic jack which raises and lowers the chassis 11 relative to the subframe 14 and ground rollers 16 carried by forks 13. The control handle 18 is pivotally connected to the sub-frame 14 so that it may be swung from an upright to a horizontal position and carries a cam which applies a drum brake on the motor shaft when in either position but releases the brake in any intermediate position. Resilient means urge the handle 18 into the upright position so that the brake is applied when the truck is not in use. To enable the truck to be driven from a position remote from the handle 18 controls for the motor and the brake are provided in a housing 35 attached to a flexible connector 27 extending through a tubular member 33. The housing 35 is provided with permanent magnets so that it may be secured to the load 52 of the truck or it may be held by the driver. A slidable plunger 39 projecting from the housing 35 has cam surfaces 47, 48 for successively actuating switches 44, 45, 46 which respectively energize a solenoid 29 to displace the handle 18 from the upright position and release the brake, energize the motor and increase the motor speed. When it is not in use the housing 35 is stowed adjacent the solenoid 29 on a column 28. The electric motor is also provided with a regenerative and rheostatic braking.
