Abstract

1,107,702. Parking devices for motor vehicles. D. L. ROBERTS. 9 Oct., 1964 [29 July, 1963] No. 27620/63. Heading-B7D. A wheel assembly for use in parking or manoeuvring a motor vehicle comprises a pair of transversely-spaced pivoted arms 12, a ground-engaging wheel 19 carried at the pivot-remote end of each arm 12, a driving wheel 20 disposed at the other end of at least one arm 12 so as to be engageable with the propeller shaft 8 of the vehicle, drive means 21 connecting each drive wheel 20 to the corresponding ground - engaging wheel 19, and an hydraulic ram 15 connected to each arm 12 to effect pivotting of the arms between a retracted position and an extended position in which the ground-engaging wheels 19 contact the road to lift the rear wheels of the vehicle and the driving wheels 20 engage the propeller shaft 8 to drive the road-engaging wheels 19 and prevent the rear axle of the vehicle from dropping. The arms 12 are pivotally connected to a transverse support member 5 secured beneath the vehicle. The drive wheels 20 may be friction wheels which engage the propeller shaft 8 directly, or they may be friction or gear wheels which engage a friction or gear wheel secured to the shaft. The drive means 21 may be chain or belt drives 22, 25, or may comprise shaft, worm or spur gear reduction drives. In an electro-hydraulic control circuit (Fig. 2. not shown) for actuating the rams (15), hydraulic fluid pumped from a reservoir by a pump (32) through a one-way valve (35) is supplied to or exhausted from the rams (15) through solenoid valves (29, 30) energized from a battery through a control switch (28) which also energizes a solenoid switch (27) supplying a motor (31) driving the pump (32). A limit switch de-energizes the motor (31) when one of the arms (12) reaches either extreme position. The pump (32) may alternatively be driven from the engine or transmission of the vehicle, or an existing pump on the vehicle may be employed.
