911,339. Vehicle axles. KLOCKNERHUMBOLDT DEUTZ A.G. March 27, 1961 [April 9, 1960], No. 11165/61. Class 79(4). [Also in Group XXXII] Each wheel 3 of a pair of vehicle wheels, especially of an amphibious vehicle, is mounted on the lower arm 1 of a bell crank lever 1, 5 pivoted to the vehicle 4. To the arm 5 of the bell crank is pivoted a height adjusting spring member comprising a spring housing 6 in which are mounted in series a plate spring arrangement 7 and a spiral spring 8, separated by a spacer member 26. The throw of each of the springs. 7 and 8 is limited by spacer members 25 ,and 27 respectively and the combined throw is limited by a stop 30. The spring arrangement 7, 8 bears at one end against the housing 6 and at the other against a plate 11 attached to a rod which passes through the housing 6 and is in threaded engagement with a sleeve 10 to which is rigidly attached a nut member 12 which may be rotated through gearing 17, 18, 15, 16 or worm gearing, by a hydraulic motor 14, or by an electric or pneumatic motor, so, by altering the length of the rod engagement, adjusting the height of the wheels, or, on an amphibious vehicle, retracting the wheels altogether. The nut members 12 are attached to sprockets 22 connected by a chain 23.
