In chain-shifting mechanism for a cycle change-speed gear comprising jockey and tensioning wheels 6, 7, mounted on a plate 5 carried by a spindle 1a secured in a fixed bracket 2 by a cap nut 20, with a helical spring 8 surrounding the composite spindle 1a, 1b and acting on the plate 5 both in compression and in torsion and the spindle la being movable by a flexible chain 9 extending through the spindle 1b and emerging from the nut 20 approximately at right-angles, the nut 20, or a ferrule 30 secured therein, has a slot 21 through which the chain 9 emerges so as to prevent damage to the chain in the event of a side blow.
