Abstract

852,264. Controlling vehicles. A. C. CARS Ltd., and MARCZEWSKI, Z. T. Jan. 30, 1959 [Jan. 30, 1958], No. 3170/58. Class 79(5). A tiller arm 1 Fig. 3 for a motor vehicle, such as is used for disabled persons, is pivotable sideways for steering and vertically for braking and carries a throttle twist grip 28 and a clutch lever 18 rotatable with the twist grip 28 so that all the controls may be operated simultaneously with one hand. The arm 1 is pivoted at 4 to a horizontal shaft 5 mounted across the vehicle in bearings 29. Sideways movement of the arm 1 operates the steering linkages 8, 9, 10 through a bracket 6 and universal joint 7. Vertical downwards movement rotates the shaft 5 and actuates the brake push rod 31 through a lever arm 30. The throttle twist grip 28 Fig. 1 is mounted on a rotatable tube 12 terminating in a flanged portion 14 attached to a Bowden cable 15. The clutch handle 18 is pivoted on bracket 17 attached to the tube 12 and has a recessed lever arm 22 projecting within the handle to engage a push rod 23 of a clutch operating master cylinder 25 attached to the tiller arm 1 by a bracket 26. In an alternative arrangement a clutch lever 34, Fig. 2 is pivoted to a bracket 36 attached to the end of the twist grip 28 and is recessed at 38 to engage a clutch operating push rod 39.
