Abstract
780,487. Electrically-propelled vehicles KAYE, E., and SHARP, J. R. May 5, 1955 [Feb. 8, 1954], No. 3572/54. Classes 79(2), 79(3) and 79(5) [Also in Group XXXIV] A power unit for a motor driven truck consists of a frame 16, carrying a ground wheel 18, and a motor 17, drive connections from the motor to the ground wheel, a vertical upper pivot bearing 32 for the frame above the motor, carried by a support 40, a lower pivot bearing 23 located between the motor 17 and the ground wheel 18 and carried by a bracket 43 from the support 40. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the frame 16 carries a fork formed of side plates 19, 20, and a plate 21, having bearings 45, 46 for the wheel 18. The drive from the motor 17 to the wheel 18 is by means of chain drives 61, 55, and a countershaft 51. Brake shoes acting on a drum 60 (see Group XXXIV) carried by the motor drive shaft, are adapted to be moved into braking relation by anti-clockwise movement of a lever 72 mounted at 74 in the frame 16, by the action of a push rod 77 passing through the axis of the bearing 32. The rod 77 is adapted to be depressed by the action of a cam 81 carried on the boss of a tiller arm 15 (Fig. 4), by means of which the power unit is rotated for steering the vehicle. In a modified construction (Fig. 6, not shown), the wheel 18 is mounted at one side only on the casing of a gear train which replaces the chain drive from the motor 17. The cam 81 is arranged so that 'braking occurs when the tiller arm is in a raised or lowered position, but the brakes are released when the arm is in a generally horizontal position.
