Abstract

876,286. Industrial trucks. CLARK EQUIPMENT CO. April 26, 1960 [June 8, 1959], No. 14524/60. Classes 79(2), 79(3) and 79(5). [Also in Group XXXIV] A power driven industrial truck having a base frame, on which is mounted a pair of laterally spaced rear combined driving and steering wheels, pivoted about a vertical axis and a steering linkage connecting the wheels has separate traction motors for the two wheels arranged to rotate in counter-rotation relative to one another to avoid a torque reaction effect on the steering lever. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 a truck 10 comprises a base frame 12 with channel section limbs 22 in and on which run rollers 36 and 34 supporting lifting forks 28 of known construction, a body section 14 with a recess 40 in which the operator stands between two steering fraction units 48. The latter (Fig. 3) comprise a cup-shaped mounting element 50, bolted to a vehicle frame member 44, above which is mounted a traction motor and casing assembly 20 and within which is mounted on bearings 84 a housing 80 supporting the wheel 16 and transmission gearing assembly 18. Within the housing 80 are bearings 92 for a bevel pinion 70 connected to the end of the traction motor shaft 68 which drives a bevel wheel 72 on a horizontal splined shaft 74 which in turn drives wheel 16 through idler wheel 102 and gear-wheel 110 on flanged shaft 112 to which is bolted the wheel 16. The wheels are steered (Fig. 2) by curved links 200 and 210 connected to lugs 156 and to crossed control arms 184, 204 which are connected together by tie rod 194. A drag link 178 is connected between control arm 184 at pivot 180 and lever 176 attached to vertical rod 172 which is connected through links 170, 166 and 164 with steering lever 158. Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) show an alternative steering lever arrangement including a hydraulic booster cylinder. The braking mechanism (Fig. 4) comprises a drum 136 bolted and keyed to the upper end of the traction motor shaft 68 and a pair of brake shoes 142, with linings 140, pivoted at pivots 144 to the vehicle frame, and held in contact with the drum by tension spring 146. The brake is released by the introduction of hydraulic fluid to cylinder 152 forcing apart pistons 150 and hence the shoes 142 through connecting rods 148.
