669,963. Controlling motor vehicles. RIJK, J. H. Nov. 23, 1949 [Nov. 26, 1948], No. 30024/49. Class 79 (v). A manual device for controlling the clutch, brakes and throttle of a motor vehicle comprises a hand lever pivoted on the steering column so that progressive pivotal movement thereof away from the steering wheel operates the clutch and then the brakes, the hand lever carrying a rotatable hand grip for throttle control, and the control of the clutch operating through the medium of a clutch operating pivoted lever which has a segmental portion for direct manual control of the clutch. As shown, the hand lever 3 is pivoted at 4 on the steering column 1 and at one end carries the rotatable hand grip 5 which controls the engine throttle through a cable 6. Connected by a universal joint 8 to the lever 3 is a push rod 7 connected to the normal brake pedal. The other end of the lever 3 carries a ball bearing 10 adapted to abut the clutch operating lever 12 beneath the steering wheel 2, which lever 12 is connected by levers 14, 15 to a rod 16 connected to the normal clutch pedal. Depression of the lever 3 first operates the lever 12 to declutch, such lever being however directly operable by means of its segmental portion, and further depression of the lever 3 operates the vehicle brakes.
