Abstract

630,516. Propelling ships. STANLEY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., HEWSON, R. P., and REARDON, J. C. May 2, 1947, No. 11834. [Class 114] [Also in Group XXXI] In a motor vehicle having a hydraulic transmission from an internal-combustion engine, the driver operates a cam mechanism so that rotation of the mechanism in one direction controls forward speeds while rotation in the other direction controls power braking and reverse speeds. The invention may be applied to invalid tricycles as shown, or to motor boats, where a hydraulic transmission is employed. In the example shown, the steering tiller 2 of the invalid tricycle has the control mechanism housed in a casing 1 pivoted at 3 to an.upright support 4 which is rotatably mounted on an upright frame-piece 5, thus enabling the steering tiller to be swung in both vertical and horizontal planes. Pivoted within the casing are sprung levers 6, 7 which control the engine throttle and the oil flow of the hydraulic transmission through cables 15, 16. The end portions of the levers 6, 7 have rollers 17, 18 which are contacted by a cam 8 which is mounted on the tiller 2, so that rotation of the tiller in one direction controls progressively forward speeds and in the other direction power-braking, 7, reverse speeds. Horizontal swinging of the tiller 2 effects steering control and downward swinging about the pivot 3 effects application of a suitable brake through a control wire 20, and the tiller can be locked in position by a spring-loaded pawl 21 engaging a ratchet 23, the pawl 22 being controlled by a lever 24 disposed within a handle 11 on the steering tiller. In a modification, when the invention is applied to motor vehicles having other forms of steering control, the throttle and oil flow of the hydraulic transmission are controlled through the levers and cam being actuated by an elongated pedal disposed transversely in the vehicle pivoted in the centre and spring-loaded at either end so that depression of the pedal in one direction provides forward speeds and in the other direction power-braking and reverse speeds. Alternatively, the actuating means for controlling the levers may be mounted on the dashboard of the vehicle or in any other suitable position.
