A process for shell moulding comprises mounting a heated pattern plate e on a turnover frame d adjacent an open topped container a for investment material, turning over the frame to clamp the pattern against the open end of the container, raising a ram c to force the investment material against the pattern, and after a predetermined time lowering the ram and returning the turnover frame to its original position for removal of the pattern plate and shell g. A yielding cushion of cellular or sponge rubber or the like may be located between the ram and the investment material.
