Abstract
573,703. Making pottery. WEDGWOOD & SONS, Ltd., J., and STEELE, A. Oct. 20, 1943, Nos. 17258/43 and 10624/44. [Class 87 (i)] In a machine for applying handles to cups or other hollow-ware, comprising holders for the handle and cup and mechanism for moving one holder relatively to the other in order to press the handle and cup together, the handle holder h is carried by a power-operated ram g and several cup holders b are carried by arms a on a shaft c rotated through Geneva mechanism e. Alternatively, the arms may carry handle holders and the ram a cup holder. The shaft c and ram g are operated in timed relation so that the ram rises whenever a cup holder is positioned above it. A light spring j interposed between the ram g and holder h ensures a yielding pressure of the handle against the cup. The ram is operated by a cam k driven from the countershaft f which drives the Geneva mechanism or by other suitable means. The first Provisional Specification describes also an apparatus comprising a fixed cup-holder and a sliding mandrel carrying the handle-holder and operated by a treadle and spring.
