Abstract

1,239,682. Apparatus for straightening the spine. J. B. M. LATRILLE. 3 Sept., 1969 [3 Sept., 1968; 28 July, 1969 (2)], No. 43544/69. Headings A5R and A6M. [Also in Division F2] An apparatus for straightening the spinal column comprises a pair of differential pulley blocks 2, Fig. 1, suspended by strips 3 from a beam 1, each block comprising two pulleys 4, 5, a support 16 for the chin of the user, straps or cables 14 attached to the support and wound round each of the pulleys 4, and cables 15 wound round each of the pulleys 5, the effective diameters of each of the pulleys 5 being adjustable. Each pulley 4, Fig. 2, has a diameter as small as is convenient and together with the pulley 5 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 8 by sleeves 6, 7 respectively. Each pulley 5 has end plates 9 between which is a spirally wound leaf spring 10 secured to the sleeve 7, a plurality of pins 11 being slidably mounted in generally radial apertures 12 in the end plates 9 to bear radially, externally on the spring 10 when wing nuts 13 are unlocked so as to adjust the radius of the largest coil. The cables 15 are wound around the outside of the pins 11, their free ends being attached to handles 17, and when no force is applied, the springs 10 assume their maximum external diameter. On application of a force at the handles 17, the effective diameters of the pulleys 5 are reduced by the compression of the pins 11 against the spring 10 which pins may then be locked in position. In a modification, the cables 14 are attached to an arch (21) Fig. 4 (not shown), and a chin piece (23) and a strap (24) are connected to members (22) which members are mounted onto the arch (21) by pivot pins (25). A further modification for use with the apparatus of Fig. 4 includes a padded member (26), Fig. 5 (not shown) arranged to bear against the back of the user and incorporating articulated lever linkages (27), (30) connected to the pad (26) and to brackets (28), (31) on the frame, and cables (32) connecting the linkages to the arch (21) or to the pulley blocks.
